Crying Foul? What You Need To Know!
It’s embarrassing to say the least. When you realize that an unrecognizable odor is coming from you or rather, your vagina. Patients are often embarrassed or wait to be seen hoping the issue resolves on it’s own, however as with any health issue, when you notice a change it’s best to contact your provider. Remember, this is what we do daily, no need to be embarrassed.
What are some possible causes for the odorous change? The most common is usually an infection called bacterial vaginosis, which is the overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina. Some additional symptoms may include abnormal discharge or vaginal itching. Bacterial vaginosis is typically treated with antibiotics.
You may also have a vaginal yeast infection. Symptoms of this include odor, inflammation of the vagina and the vulval. Treatment may include an oral medication or an antifungal cream.
Hormonal changes can also be a contributor in which case this may be a great time to see your provider to understand the changes your body is experiencing and what might still be to come. Additional causes stem from sweat, which can linger from working out etc. as well as a forgotten tampon, or even diet.
Patients are always encouraged to notify us whenever they first experience symptoms. Our body has a unique way of letting us know something is going on, so it’s best to listen. There are a myriad of possibilities as to the cause, so as the issue persists it’s best to seek the care of a medical professional. Our job is to make you feel comfortable and cared for as we treat the needs and concerns you have.
